About Kids Cafe Network
A Kids Café Healthy Eating Music CD
was produced in a series of sessions during the school holidays in May 2003.
It consists of a selection of songs based on food and nutrition and is available
free. Contact us
for more information.
Background
The project was set up by local volunteers and workers from St. Anthony’s Children’s House (an NCH family centre), supported by a Community Dietitian from Newcastle Nutrition and by the Thomas Gaughan Community Centre.
A pilot scheme ran in summer 1998 after four months of
planning. Three one-hour sessions were held at a local Community Centre and
catered for an average of 40 children aged 5-13 years. The themes were:
Starch
Up For Energy - World Cup Theme
Bone
Up to Milk
Give Me 5
- The Importance of Fruit and Vegetables
By summer 1998 the project was expanded to a second site and in 2000 there were more sites running Kids Cafés.
In June 2000, a Kids Café Network Co-ordinator was appointed and Kids Café sessions were increased to running every school holiday.
Kids Can Cook! - a 10-week cooking course for children aged 5-11 years ran during May/June 2002.
Kids Café received funding from the Barnardo’s Newcastle Children’s Fund in April 2002. The grant of £100,000 over two years provided a part-time worker - the Kids Café Assistant - as well as continued funding for the Kids Café Co-ordinator post and the project running costs.
Starting a Kids Café
The Kids Café Manual, Getting a Kids Café Started, gives a step-by-step guide on how to set up a Kids Café.
Additional support and advice may be provided by the Kids Café Network Co-ordinator and volunteers at the project.
The Kids Café Network Standards ensure that all sites running a session under the “Kids Café” name provide a high quality of care and safety for all children taking part.
Limited funding may be available for pilot schemes to be run in the East End of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The manual costs £10.00 including postage and packaging (free to groups working with children in the East End of Newcastle upon Tyne).
To order a copy, please send a cheque made payable to "Kids
